City Community Legal Advice Centre

Categories

Benefits, Employment, Family and Relationships, Housing and homelessness

Description

We are a University Community Legal Advice Centre based at the City Law School, City University which is part of the University of London. At City Community Legal Advice Centre, students, staff and external lawyers volunteer to provide advice and assistance to clients on a variety of legal issues. The service is run by qualified solicitors. All students and trainees work under supervision, which means advice is delivered to the same standard as practice. We offer free legal advice on certain areas of law to people who are not eligible for legal aid and cannot afford to pay. We can advise on areas of family law, employment, housing disrepair and allocations, small business, civil litigation, consumer, and personal injury. The service is advice only, which means we do not undertake casework or provide representation. We also offer referrals to other services who may be able to assist you if we cannot take your case. Our trained student advisers take details of your case in advance and if it is suited to our service we offer you an appointment with a qualified volunteer lawyer. We cannot take urgent or overly complex cases. We also operate a form filling service for the welfare benefit personal independence payment. Trained student advisers work under the supervision of a qualified non-practising specialist lawyer to assist clients to make their PIP application. Our housing disrepair service focuses on clients who are tenants in social housing who have a disrepair problem, and the advice includes drafting a letter of complaint to the landlord which the client sends on their own behalf.

Description

Ukraine Response Team has been launched in March 2022 to support Ukrainian refugees who reside in the borough under the Homes for Ukraine Scheme and their sponsor. We also coordinate a range of support for Ukrainian refugees in partnership with our multidisciplinary partners and professional network. Our team is specifically funded to oversee support to Ukrainians who are here under the Homes for Ukraine scheme, however we are also able to offer general support and advice to any other Ukrainian who lives in the borough as a result of fleeing the war in Ukraine. The team does not offer emergency assistance or statutory intervention, and our approach is to encourage Ukrainian refugees to access “business as usual” services and wider support available in the borough that they are fully entitled to. If your services become aware of any Ukrainian residents who present to be in need of advice or assistance, we would like to ask that you share information about these residents with our team so that we could check if they are already known to us and to ensure effective information sharing and partnership working in relation to these clients. If you have any questions, please contact Ukraine Response Team on 07971 026278 before making the referral.
